| Eko cotton. Eko Tekla 8/4 and Eko Miranda 4x8/2! The beautiful natural-coloured cotton comes from southern Peru. The melted snow from the mighty Andes has created fertile agricultural valleys where cotton is grown. In the Canete valley cotton has been grown since ancient times, archaeological discoveries have shown that cotton has been cultivated here for more than 5000 years. The cotton is grown ecologically on
small self-owned farms. Bird droppings are used instead of artificial fertiliser, pests
are controlled by biological methods and 5000 year old irrigation canals carry run off
water from the Andes for irrigation. The cotton is sown in the autumn and
it takes nine months for the plants to reach the height of a man before being harvested in
the spring. The golden cotton plants shed their leaves and the seedpods open, just as the
dandelion. It is the white seed-hairs that are picked and the fibres separated from the
cottonseeds; these are packed in cotton-bales and transported to the cotton-mill where the
cotton is transformed into cotton yarn. The cotton yarn is transported by cargo ship from
Limas port, Callao, to Gothenburg in Sweden. The cotton yarn is ecologically certified through SKAL
in Peru and KRAV in Sweden. (Information on cotton production: Bergman Sweden AB.) The cotton yarn is hand dyed by us in our own dye works
in the south of Gotland. We use dyes and additives that are mild on the environment. We
have our own water and drainage is through a three-chamber septic tank. We are economical
with the use of water and electricity and carry out careful controls and measurements of
the dye-baths before discharge. We dye the yarn with one or several colours in the same
yarn skein. The handicraft method makes every yarn and dye bath unique. The colours have a high tolerance to rubbing and light. The yarn and articles made from it can be machine washed using a colour washing powder that is environmental friendly at 40-60 degrees Centigrade, they can also be spin dried, or tumble dried, or placed on an airy net or cotton towel to dry. The yarn is available in two qualities, Tekla 8/4, 350 m/100 g and Miranda 4x8/2.

Wool yarn On Gotland, lambs are a natural part of the landscape. The glossy naturally grey wool comes from ecologically raised lambs from farms with KRAV certification. The lamb producers are skilful breeders who have for many years worked with care for the environment and have developed the breeding so as to produce fine skins and glossy wool. The lambs are shorn
and the beautiful curly wool sorted into four groups, from the very dark to the lightest
fibres. The sorted wool is washed at Ateljé Huskroken. The wool is spun into lovely yarn
of different thickness and number of threads at the little spinning mill on the island, Gotlands
Spinneri in Fardhem, a couple of miles away. The washing and dyeing of the yarns is
undertaken at our own dye works in Ronehamn where we have our own herb garden with plants
suitable for dyeing. We use dyes and additives which are mild on the environment and which
come from both nature and from dye works. We are economical with the use of water
and electricity. The colours have a high tolerance to washing, rubbing and light. The grey
mottled wool gives the colours beautiful nuances. The wool yarn is single coloured and the
handicraft method makes each dye bath unique. The wool has a dirt resisting capacity
and it is often sufficient to air out textiles in moist air to clean them. Articles should
also be allowed to rest after use so that that the wool fibres have a chance to contract. Care should be taken when washing wool; use a neutral environmentally approved liquid detergent or dishwashing detergent. Allow articles to soak for a while in hand warm water, squeeze carefully and do not twist or rub as this can cause the fibres to get matted. The rinsing water should be the same temperature as the washing water. A spin dryer can be used to remove water after the last rinse. Articles should be laid flat to dry on an airy surface or a cotton towel that is replaced occasionally. NOTE TUMBLE DRYING CAUSES WOOL TO SHRINK!
The yarn is available in three qualities Eko Strand 1 thread, 340 m/100g Eko Häll 2 thread, 170 m/100 g, Eko Hage 2 thread, 340 m/100g.
