GOOD ENVIRONMENTAL CHOICE YARN NOW AVAILABLE TO THE DISCERNING CONSUMER!
The Swedish Foundation for Nature Conservation has environmentally approved the production process for our yarns. We are now allowed to use the trademark “Good Environmental Choice” within the range of Good Fibres and preparation of our hand-dyed wool and cotton yarns, and good preparation for flax yarn. These yarns are suitable for knitting, crocheting and weaving.

“It is very satisfying that a small yarn producer such as Ateljé Huskroken takes the initiative and shows that it is possible to produce beautiful, colourful yarns marked Good Environmental Choice.  This gives the consumer the possibility to be both fashion and environmentally conscious. We hope that others will follow.” This was said by Frida Hök of The Swedish Foundation for Nature Conservation, who undertook the environmental tests of Ateljé Huskroken’s yarn production.

Natural material, glossy cotton from Peru, flax from Helsingland and wool from Gotland in Sweden, is hand-dyed in our own workshop in Ronehamn on the Southeast coast of Gotland.

In our herb garden we cultivate the plants used for dyeing. We also use synthetic dyes. We sell patterns for garments for both children and adults.

It feels good that our yarns are controlled and have been awarded the Good Environmental Choice certification. We have excluded chemicals and dyes that do not meet the required environmental standard. We have a wide assortment of colours, and as we are acquainted with all the stages in the production from fibre to coloured yarn, we know that our products have a very high quality.

Kicki has since childhood loved knitting, weaving and working with textiles, and has always been concerned with the environment. “During the last few years I have had the possibility to realise a dream, to work full-time with textiles. It is wonderful to have the chance to inspire others to create and work with their hands with good materials. We have many visitors to our shop in the summer. We have guided tours of our herb garden, dyeing workshop and weaving studio.”

Rolf , who for most of his life worked with housing production, is now “head gardener and caretaker at Huskroken”.  “I have always been interested in gardening. It is exciting to venture into a new world, the textile one. One challenge has been to cultivate plants suitable for dyeing that without negatively affecting the environment can give beautifully coloured fibres. We have learnt which of the traditional methods are environmentally friendly and which are not.”

A good environmental choice does not exclude style. Young Swedish designers who create modern “ecological haute couture” use our yarns. The United Nations meeting on Sustainable Development, Production and Lifestyle questions, held in Stockholm in 2007, included an exhibition “Saving the Planet in Style”. Benita Ben Djama exhibited haute couture garments she had created using our yarn.
